Fishermen unload a deep-sea haul onto a trawler. New Zealand crews learned to fish the depths once the Exclusive Economic Zone gave them an effective monopoly, in 1978. Many companies embarked on joint ventures with foreign ships, as initially they did not have adequate ships or knowledge. Companies eventually bought their own vessels. In the 2000s foreign vessels were still seen in New Zealand waters, as many quota holders leased vessels and crews to catch their quota for them.
