With its elongated shape, New Zealand can be subtropically warm in the north and bitterly cold in the south, on the same day. Forecasting such diverse weather conditions used to be done with the help of hundreds of volunteers. The process is largely automated now, although the weather stills holds a fascination for outdoors-loving Kiwis.
