A 2005 government proposal to provide public walkways beside major waterways was strongly opposed by Federated Farmers, which believed it would result in a loss of farmers' property rights. Otago farmers marched through Dunedin's Octagon carrying a coffin and collecting signatures for a petition opposing the measure. In the end the government bowed to the pressure and withdrew the proposal.
