Hone Tūwhare (back row, right) is pictured at Point Chevalier, Auckland, in the early 1940s with some of his friends, including Johnny Dixon (front right) and Reni Rapi (back left). At the time Tūwhare was training to become a boilermaker at the Ōtāhuhu workshops of New Zealand Railways; he gained his trade certificate in 1944.
