Hone Tūwhare’s mother, Mihipaea, died when he was five. This painting by Shirley Grace, who was Tūwhare’s partner for a time, shows Tūwhare’s father, Pene, bathing Mihipaea. The young Hone peers around the door, and Grace’s granddaughter is depicted as a cherubim. Tūwhare bought the painting, which he admired greatly.
