Chew Chong's Jubilee Dairy Factory

Chew Chong's Jubilee Dairy Factory

Chinese immigrant and shopkeeper Chew Chong was an early dairy entrepreneur. He opened his Jubilee Dairy Factory at Eltham in 1887, followed by others elsewhere in Taranaki. By the early 1890s local farmers had decided to club together in a cooperative dairy factory. They would supply it with milk and take the profit themselves – rather than letting it go to a commercial middleman.
