New Zealand’s first purpose-built dairy factory was built at Edendale, near Invercargill. It produced its first cheese in 1882. Butter made there went to Britain as part of the first shipment of refrigerated produce, also in 1882. Edendale factory is shown here in 1895, when it was a two-storey wooden building with insulated walls. By the the 2000s it was a huge plant producing a wide variety of dairy products.
