In the last three decades of the 19th century a tourist industry developed in New Zealand as new forms of transport such as steamships and a rail network emerged. This map of rail routes from 1889 highlights some of the attractions available to tourists travelling by train. The 'hot lakes' of the North Island and the cold lakes of the South Island are particularly promoted, and hot springs in Te Aroha, Ōkoroire and Hanmer are also advertised.
