People who die without leaving a will are described as having died intestate. This page from the New Zealand Gazette in 1869 records some of the intestate estates which were administered by Robert Chapman, the Official Administrator of Intestate Estates for the Otago province. The accounts outline the value of the estates, administration expenses and the value of the residue once these expenses were subtracted. Some estates were very small – the estate of Peter Yola, a miner of Waitāhuna, was worth 11 shillings and 3 pence (about $66 in today's terms) once expenses were paid.
