Story: Interdenominational Christianity

Evangelist Henry Varley

These cartoons, published in the New Zealand Observer in April 1890, depict visiting Melbourne-based evangelist Henry Varley. During his New Zealand tour Varley preached to a crowd of 5,000 in the crater of Mt Eden, Auckland. In an address to the Young Men's Christian Association he was reported to have 'protested against the denomination system of the churches, and pleaded for Christian union'.
