Story: Te Arawa

Tama’s descendants

Tama’s descendants

The relatives and descendants of Tamatekapua (Tama) spread out and explored the coastline and inland areas. Among the inland explorers was Īhenga, to whom many names throughout the Rotorua lakes area are attributed. Another legendary figure in this genealogy is Hatupatu, who battled with the fearsome bird-woman Kurangaituku.
