Story: Waitangi Tribunal – Te Rōpū Whakamana

Royal apology to Tainui, 1995

Waitangi Tribunal reports, which summarise and discuss the evidence presented at tribunal hearings, sometimes provide the basis for settling claims with the Crown. In the case of the Crown's settlement with Tainui, Queen Elizabeth II delivered the Crown's apology to Tainui in person in 1995. This television clip shows her signing the written apology with Prime Minister Jim Bolger, as Tainui elders sing a traditional waiata.
