In the 1989 local-government reforms, Whangamōmona was allocated to the Manawatū–Wanganui region. Locals, whose land communication was entirely with Stratford and the rest of Taranaki, decided to ‘secede’, and declared the town an independent republic. Since then the biennial republic day – seen here in 1992 – has been a great occasion in the township and drawn visitors from far afield.
