Story: Tramping

Page 5: Tramping yarns

We invited people to send in stories about the bush, and received some good yarns about tramping. Here is a selection.

What's your story?

A leg up

Angela Corrigan took this photograph of fellow trampers in the Tararuas, where her story is set.

A load off my mind

John Irvine stands at the top of ‘The Gutbuster’ track in the Orongorongo Valley near Wellington. He learned some hard lessons on this first expedition into the hills.

Bergesen’s hut

This is Les Bergesen’s hut near Ohakune in 1949. Ashley Cunningham tells of how it came to be built.

Tracks

For 30 years Mike Deavin has enjoyed tramping in the bush. He has been a Department of Conservation guide, an honorary ranger and a hut warden. He has also written bush poetry.
