Kurahaupō tribes of Te Tau Ihu
Ngāti Kuia, Rangitāne o Wairau and Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō are the three tribes in Te Tau Ihu who trace their descent from the Kurahaupō canoe. They supplied these stories about their history and traditions.
Rangitāne o Wairau

Led by the chief Te Huataki, Rangitāne people migrated south from the Wairarapa and settled in the Wairau area.
Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō

Named for their journey towards the setting sun, Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō migrated from the North Island to settle around Te Tau Ihu.
