This fossilised skull is from a primitive shark-toothed dolphin. The skull and jaws are framing Andrew Grebneff, who prepared the fossil at the University of Otago’s geology museum. The fossil was found in the Otekaike limestone in Waitaki Valley, and is from the Late Oligocene age, about 25 million years ago. At the time this dolphin died, the area was a large shallow sea. These animals were widespread 28 to 15 million years ago, but then became extinct.
