Story: Marine invaders

Port of Tauranga

Port of Tauranga

Tauranga is one of New Zealand’s busiest ports. Altogether, New Zealand ports received 3,542 overseas ship visits in 2003. Marine species can be unintentionally transported, on hulls or in ballast water. Regulations and guidelines are in place to reduce the risks, and there are checks for new and unwanted organisms at ports with international shipping movements. However, fishing vessels and leisure craft can spread pests around sites that are less actively monitored.
