Story: Herons

White-faced heron

White-faced heron

The white-faced heron was an occasional visitor to New Zealand in the early 20th century, and eventually began breeding here in the 1940s. Now they are the most numerous and widespread herons in the country. They are found along the coast, and inland around wetlands.
