These fridges left at a Wellington dump have had their chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) removed and are ready for crushing and recycling. CFCs were used in refrigerators until the 1990s, and have contributed to the depletion of the ozone layer – a protective layer in the atmosphere that filters out much harmful ultraviolet radiation. Although CFCs have been banned, they will remain in the atmosphere until at least 2050.
