New Zealand athletes (left to right) Pat Boot, Cecil Matthews and Jack Lovelock train for the Berlin Olympics with Englishman Jerry Cornes (far right) at Herne Hill, England, in July 1936. Lovelock had earlier won the mile race at the 1934 Empire Games in London. Matthews and Boot would both go on to win gold medals at the 1938 Empire Games in Sydney. Matthews won gold in the 3-mile and 6-mile races, while Boot won gold for the 880 yards and bronze for the mile.
