Ōamaru's first council housing

Ōamaru's first council housing

Large city councils were not the only providers of council or community housing. In 2010 the Waitaki District Council owned 118 units in Ōamaru, Hampden and Palmerston. This 17-unit complex in Ōamaru's Claire Street was the first community housing built in 1965 by the former Ōamaru Borough Council. However, 45 years later the district council sold the units so it could construct new ones that better met modern requirements and building codes.
