Council flats: Auckland, 1954

Minister of Māori Affairs Ernest Corbett and John Luxford, Auckland's mayor, inspect a new block of council flats under construction in inner-city Nelson Street in the 1950s. Corbett may have been viewing the dilapidated 19th-century housing in the background, where many newly urbanised Māori were living. During the 1960s many Māori residents were rehoused in new state-housing areas in South Auckland.
