Story: Diverse Christian churches

Brethren Bible and tract depot, Palmerston North

Brethren Bible and tract depot, Palmerston North

Edward Whitehead (right) came from an Open Brethren background in Britain and migrated to New Zealand in the 1870s. He spent much of his life producing and distributing religious publications. In 1900 he opened his Bible and tract depot on Palmerston North's main street (seen here around 10 years later). The windmill at left rear powered Whitehead's printing press, and sometimes night shifts were worked to take advantage of the wind.
