These women were dressed in contemporary Indian garments for a fashion parade organised by Mahila Samaj, the women's group of the Wellington Indian Association, in 1972. Before the Second World War, New Zealand's Indian community consisted mainly of men and boys. The rise of women's organisations after the war was a reflection of the growing number of women who had arrived as brides. Mahila Samaj was formed in 1970.
