One of the most important influences on Hone Tuwhare’s development as a poet was his friendship with fellow poet and communist Ron (R. A. K.) Mason. Mason (right) offered encouragement and advice, and published one of Tuwhare’s first poems in the communist newspaper the People’s Voice in 1950.
