By the early 21st century the increase in the Māori population and the immigration of the previous 40 years had created a more ethnically diverse society in New Zealand – especially in Auckland. The regular Saturday-morning market in Ōtara, South Auckland, was the largest street market in the country, and was noted for its Polynesian art, culture and foods.
