Scandinavian parade, Wellington, 2003

These Swedes are in a Viking float, made for the Scandinavian parade in Wellington for the 11th biennial Scandinavian Gathering. Some 300 people celebrated their Scandinavian heritage at this event. Workshops featured Easter and Christmas decoration-making, folk dancing, cooking, embroidery and music. While recent immigrants are often multilingual, most descendants of the original 1870s immigrants have been assimilated.
