Story: Gender inequalities

Polytechnic graduates

Polytechnic graduates

This 2010 photograph of Otago Polytechnic graduates shows the greater numbers of women that had become typical of the tertiary education sector. Those wearing gold are graduating in occupational therapy, while those wearing buff or burnished gold are graduating in architecture, building and engineering. The gender breakdown of the two groups maintains the traditional concentration of women in caring roles, and men in higher-paying and more prestigious technical roles.
