Cable logging of radiata pine is carried out near Tokoroa. Exotic forests were first planted in the vicinity in the 1920s and 1930s, at a time when the land was unsuitable for animal farming because of cobalt deficiency in the soil. While farming has since developed, much land is still used for plantation forests.
