Story: City boosters and promoters

Sol Square, Christchurch

Sol Square, Christchurch

Some property developers want to leave their mark on a city through their buildings. In the early 2000s Christchurch developer Dave Henderson transformed a collection of inner-city warehouses into Sol Square, which contains restaurants, bars and nightclubs. He wanted to make the square one of the most desirable urban nightspots in the country. For a time the area was highly successful, but in November 2010 Henderson was declared bankrupt, and in February 2011 the area was badly damaged in the earthquake and was cordoned off within the red zone.
