Grocer Jackson & Craven's van delivers the goods during a 1926 flood in Palmerston North. Free delivery of groceries was an attractive feature for women at home looking after young children, in an era before widespread car ownership. While grocers had to pay for the costs of running a vehicle, once a shopper opted for delivery they often became regular customers, with standing orders which were delivered each week on an appointed day.
