Government land purchases, Wairoa, 1860s

Government agent Donald McLean negotiated to buy Māori land at Wairoa (on which the future town was founded) in 1864, and other pieces of land in the district over the next few years. This is probably one of the occasions when purchase deeds were signed. McLean is sitting under the large tree at left.
