By the early 1990s the New Zealand economy was no longer in a growth cycle and builders were the first to feel the downturn. These four Wellington apprentices (left to right: Stewart Rose, Justin Chamberlain, Jason Davey and Jason Hague-Smith) were within a year of becoming tradesmen. With the decline in building they were facing redundancy. However they were able to complete their appenticeship only because their employer, Fletcher Construction, donated their labour for a community building project in Wainuiomata.
