Paerangi i te Whare Toka

Before Kupe arrived from Hawaiki to explore the river, and before Turi’s descendants settled the region, it is said that there was an original people living there whose ancestor was Paerangi i te Whare Toka. This carving of Paerangi is by Te Otinga Te Pēhi Waretini.
