In the past, cities held large-scale exhibitions that showcased their assets and industries. The New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition was held in Dunedin from 1925 to 1926, and attracted 3.2 million visitors in 24 weeks. At this time the city’s growth had slowed relative to the other main centres, and the exhibition was an attempt to show that Dunedin was still a good place to live and do business.
