Waiau Ferry Hotel, 1870s

Carriages wait outside the Ferry Hotel for travellers who will soon cross the Waiau River on their way south to Culverden, or, having crossed over, will head north to Kaikōura. The hotel and township sprang up because people stopped there while waiting to be ferried across the river.
