Story: Land ownership

Certificates of title

Certificates of title

From 1870 New Zealand adopted the Torrens system, under which a land title was formally registered. This was one of many certificates held by the Department of Lands and Survey, which administered the system. Subsequently this role was inherited by Land Information New Zealand (LINZ). The certificate has a unique title number, and records the names of the owners and a history of the property transactions.
