It is estimated that 90% of dairy herds in New Zealand are infected with bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) at some time. It is extremely contagious and excreted in mucus, dung, urine and semen, and passed on by direct contact. This tongue and oesophagus of a yearling animal shows the severe ulceration caused by the disease.
