Pasture measurement, Lincoln University dairy farm

Pasture measurement, Lincoln University dairy farm

A Lincoln University student is being shown how to use a pasture meter, also known as a rising-plate meter, which measures the height of the pasture. From this, the dry-matter mass can be calculated and the feed available in the paddock estimated. This information is vital for feed budgeting, where farmers balance the available feed with the nutritional requirements of their cows.
