Story: Deer and deer farming

Père David deer

Père David deer

Père David deer are native to China. They have smaller antlers than red deer and mate earlier – however their gestation period is longer than that of red deer, so this offers no real advantage. In the 1980s some were imported for research purposes, but only small numbers remain in New Zealand.
