Break feeding uses an electric fence to ration pasture, allowing cows only a small additional area each 1–2 days. This is done with an electric fence that can be easily and quickly moved to a new location. The advantage of break feeding, especially in wet winter conditions, is that it ensures cows fully utilise the available pasture, and minimise trampling, before they are allowed an extra ration. A single electric fence wire is enough to hold these Freisian cows back, even though it is obvious that they manage to reach under the wire for some distance.
