Photographed in the South Island in the 1940s, this hunter is roaring for stags using a cow’s horn. In autumn, stags begin roaring to announce their presence to other stags in the area. When they meet up they fight for supremacy and the right to mate with hinds in the area. For their part, hunters ‘roar’ to attract stags – or at least get them to reply. If they do, the hunter then has some idea of their location.
