Forest Service staff protest

The restructuring of government departments responsible for managing forests led to the end of the New Zealand Forest Service in 1987. Its functions were split between the Forestry Corporation, which took over exotic forests, and the new Department of Conservation, which became responsible for most state-owned indigenous forests. In the process, many skilled Forest Service workers lost their jobs. Here staff members protest the imminent demise of their department.
