Story: South Canterbury region

Mixed farming

Mixed farming

In the 19th century some cropping farmers ran a few dairy cattle to provide a regular income. This is Cruickshank’s farm at Willowbridge, in 1898. The cows were milked by hand in the shed on the right. Maturing wheat can be seen in the back fields.
