Giant land snails

Giant land snails

Geologist Ferdinand Hochstetter arrived in 1858 with the Austrian Novara expedition and made extensive collections of New Zealand plants, animals and fossils which are held in Vienna. A number of New Zealand species are named after him, including the giant land snail Paryphanta hochstetteri. The name is written on the labels in this collection, at centre top.
