This government-sponsored site provides access to information about New Zealand’s native biodiversity, and describes the 27 funded programmes of the New Zealand Biodiversity Strategy. It includes resources such as relevant national and international legislation, guides, classifications and maps.

Department of Conservation/Te Papa Atawhai
The Department of Conservation (DoC) is charged with conserving the natural and historic heritage of New Zealand. Its site identifies the reserves, national parks and walking tracks it administers, and gives detailed information on plants and animals, pests and weeds, and marine and coastal areas. There is a section for schools, and online access to many DoC publications.

The Dictionary of New Zealand Biography site contains numerous biographies of New Zealand people who were active between 1769 and 1960, including scientists, conservationists, and others with an interest in the natural environment. To find people engaged in a particular activity, choose ‘Advanced search’ and then select an occupation. The section ‘Our land, our people’ contains historical exhibitions on environmental topics.
