During the postcard mania of the early 20th century it became common for visitors to Paterson Inlet Post Office on Stewart Island to send leaf postcards such as this one, which was mailed, correctly stamped, to a correspondent in Nelson. The Post Office frequently announced that such mailings were prohibited, but they appear to have persisted for a number of years.
