This table also highlights the decline from 1900 in the proportion of New Zealanders with jobs in the primary (agriculture and mining) sector, and the rise, especially after 1945, of people employed in the tertiary (or service) sector. In the last years of the 20th century the growth of services even led to a decline in the proportions of people employed in the secondary (industrial) sector. These figures are adapted from census figures, and do not include Māori before 1941. The 1941 figures are an estimate.
