Story: Second World War

Allies and Axis countries

Allies and Axis countries

This table shows the dates that countries entered the Second World War as part of either the Allies or the Axis. The war began as primarily a European conflict, but it widened in 1941. The Soviet Union joined the Allies in June 1941, and then in December Japan bombed the American fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. This brought the United States, followed by China, into the war, making it a fully global conflict. The dates in the table are New Zealand dates.
