In January 2010 the former New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond was auctioned for more than NZ$ 1 million to the Kolkota Knight Riders in India's lucrative IPL (Indian Premier League) Twenty20 competition. Worldwide television rights and intense popular enthusiasm in India helped to pay for such salaries, which were a long way from the small daily allowance paid to New Zealand test cricketers a generation earlier.
